The author uses the vernacular of the region to convey the oral history of a people who faced hard times with resilience and humor. History written down already draws out ample yellow fever, war, all manner of pestilence, lost fortune, and a hundred sorry states. The intent of "e;The Suburbs of Scutchalo"e; is to revel in the absurd moments and stories arising in time to soften a difficult sunrise.
