“My brilliant career” is the debut novel by Australian writer and feminist Miles Franklin. His protagonist, Sybilla Melvin, does not want to live by the harsh class laws of late nineteenth-century Australian society, but faces the need to sacrifice her own dreams for the well-being of her family. She works hard and suffers daily from her father’s alcoholism and the harsh living conditions in the Australian bush. A matrimony with a young and promising farmer Harold Beecham can solve all her problems – but will Sybil be able to sacrifice her own convictions and independence and live like everyone else? How will her ”brilliant” career continue?
Miles Franklin’s novel is a great example of classical prose, however, the book raises questions which are still relevant nowadays: narrow social boundaries, stereotypes, responsibility and desire, as well as the conflict of opportunities, ambitions and social environment. Incredible descriptions of Australian nature organically complement the story and make it even brighter.

Роман Майлз Франклін — прекрасний зразок класичної прози, проте книга підіймає питання, актуальні й донині: вузькі соціальні рамки, стереотипи, обов’язок та бажання, а також конфлікт можливостей, амбіцій і соціального середовища. Неймовірні описи австралійської природи органічно доповнюють оповідь та роблять її ще яскравішою.
