Beschreibung

Views of the United States of America globally are often as polarised as those within the United States itself. At this potentially critical juncture in America's history, Backlash probes the underlying tensions and proximate factors that have shaped America, that in recent history paved the way for the rise of Donald Trump, and that will continue to shape the future of this century's global hyperpower.

Nirmal Ghosh, writer, podcaster, artist and wildlife conservationist, has had a 30-year career as a foreign correspondent with Singapore's The Straits Times, in Manila, New Delhi, Bangkok, and, from October 2016 to December 2023, in Washington DC. Born and raised in India, of mixed German-Indian parentage, he is a former president of the Foreign Correspondents' Association of the Philippines and the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand. He is a Jefferson Fellow alumnus of the East-West Centre. In the course of his journalism, he has covered conflict, disasters, climate change, elections, and transitions from the Maldives to the Himalayas, from Sarawak in Malaysia to Sendai in Japan, and from Silicon Valley to the 'swamp' of Washington DC. This is his sixth book.

'Brilliant, perceptive, and hard-hitting — and bursting with wit and wisdom — Backlash is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand America in the age of Trump. Nirmal Ghosh is one of the most insightful and eloquent writers of our time.' - Amy ChuaYale Law Professor and author, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and Political Tribes

' Backlash is the work of a seasoned journalist-writer who brings his sharp observations and understanding to a country he clearly admires and that intrigues him. Nirmal Ghosh witnessed much in America at a time of profound change internally and major shifts globally in the world order. He had good conversations with a variety of Americans. He absorbed all this and using his strong writing skills, produced a readable book to explain the contradiction that is America and the changes that unfolded in society and the body politic during the Trump and Biden years. A good read.' - Chan Heng CheeAmbassador-at-Large and former Singapore Ambassador to the United States (1996–2012)

'The United States is a great society. It's also an open society. Yet, paradoxically, it's also a frustratingly difficult society to understand as we get drowned by the noise. Nirmal Ghosh has done a brilliant job of going beyond the noise to reveal deeper trends in contemporary America. This book is a must-read.' - Kishore Mahbubaniformer Singapore Ambassador to the United Nations and author, Living the Asian Century

'It can be difficult to see the forest through the trees. Nirmal Ghosh, after trudging through the thicket of contemporary American society, provides a clear overview of how and why the United States has gone from Obama to Trump to Biden and back to Trump. In this unvarnished look at the paradoxes of a superpower, Ghosh achieves what few authors writing about contemporary US politics and policy have accomplished — a concise but compelling explanation that serves as an essential primer for international readers seeking lucidity ahead of an uncertain and possibly unprecedented period of geo-political upheaval.' - Steven L Hermanformer Voice of America White House Bureau Chief, adjunct assistant professor at Shenandoah University, and author, Behind the White House Curtain

'A deeply felt picture of America over its tumultuous last few years since the revolution of 2016, incisively dissected by journalistic investigation, first-hand reporting, and interviewing experts and academics. 'America remains beyond the boundary, different, crazy, ridiculous but like a horror film, frighteningly addictive — whatever we think about it, we cannot take our eyes off the world's pivotal power. 'Moving and deeply informative, this remarkable, brief, concise, and dread- and hope-inducing book captures the very essence of a United States in the midst of a perfect storm. A brilliant, sobering, enlightening, worrying, but hopeful book — like America itself.' - Inderjeet ParmarProfessor of International Politics and Associate Dean, Research at City St George's, University of London, and author, Foundations of the American Century
