Beschreibung

The year is 1862,and the Union forces have overtaken the South Carolina Sea Islands, freeing its enslaved people. Lucy, a young orphaned Gullah slave, finds herself fleeing the murderous rampage of retreating Southern whites, exacting revenge her community of slaves. Following vague directions provided by her recently deceased father, her journey takes her through the treacherous and war-torn Sea Islands, in search of a school for freed slaves. Enduring torrential rain, disease, starvation, and deadly skirmishes, her resolve never falters. She learns that not all whites are slavers, and the security she seeks is fleeting. Her story is one of determination and grit, and the desire for a life where she can determine her future. Change Gonna Come is a work of historical fiction. Throughout the story, little known facts and events about the Civil War Era, such as the lives of embedded war artists, are woven into the fabric of the narrative. The War was not simply a fight for Emancipation, but a war of Reunification. It is about hope; Lucy's determined search for freedom and her long lost mother. Change Gonna Come looks at Slavery and The American Civil War through the eyes of a child and the fading lens of reconstruction.
