Eons ago, the world of Shalara was threatened by Katastarof, Lord of Calamity, God of Destruction, and Shalara's pantheon worked together to seal him away in a tomb bound by several Keys, artifacts of immense power. The Keys were scattered, and all was well as it could be among a group of bickering, petty gods. But now, Katastarof seeks to find the Keys and free himself to bring ruin once again. While the rest of the gods panic and fight among themselves, one splits away to enlist the help of Jonathan Strait, part-time bard, wannabe hero, and all around scaredy-cat, to save the day and retrieve the Keys before Katastarof can. Armed with only his wits, his nerve, and a sapient, sardonic spellbook, John must begin his journey in the treacherous Forest of Aldar, to stop yet another divine war from bringing the world to ruin.
