Amy Collins is a ten-year-old girl whose story is filled with laughter and tears. In 1930, her father died in New York City. Her new stepfamily was vicious and hostile toward her. She had a problem making friends because she was an outsider and the locals treated her with indifference. She had to navigate through an unfriendly environment to make a place for herself. In the process, the town went through some monumental changes of its own.
