Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Though sensible that he accomplished little while travelling among them as a kind of outside conscience, endeavoring to exert a restraining influence over their wild lives, until, broken in health and constitution, he was compelled to forsake the field of labor, yet as his position of instructor in a wild Indian camp gave him an opportunity possessed by few of becoming acquainted with the red man in his rude home, and of studying his nature on his own native plains, he may, perhaps, be held excusable, if not justified, in thus intruding still another book upon the reading public.
